Planning for life after work is more than just working out how much income you’ll have or the types of holidays you would like to take.

A disability parking permit allows a person with a mobility disability to use designated parking bays that are located close to the entrances of shopping centres, hospitals and other public places. Permits are also available for organisations that transport people with a mobility disability.

For more information including how to apply, contact the Department of Transport and Main Roads which manages the Disability Parking Permit Scheme in Queensland.

Currently, each Australian state and territory has its own disability parking scheme (also known as a mobility parking scheme). Each uses the International Symbol for Access (right) and recognise each other's disability parking schemes. This means, for example, you can use your Queensland permit in Victoria.

As the eligibility and concessions vary, if you are planning to apply for a disability parking permit outside of Queensland, you should contact the relevant state or territory authority for details. The Victorian Government has produced a summary of Disabled Persons Parking Schemes in Australia, that you may find helpful.

The Australian Disability Parking Scheme

The Australian Government has been aware of the confusion associated with each state and territory having its own disability parking scheme and has developed an Australian Disability Parking Scheme that is recognised nationally. This scheme is being gradually introduced across all states during 2010.

Disability parking: Information for businesses and builders

If you are a property developer, builder or business operator you should be aware of the Disability (Access to Premises—Buildings) Standards 2010 which set out requirements (including disability car parking) and technical specifications to ensure dignified access to, and use of, buildings for people with disability. These standards seek to align building codes with the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (Cth) and equivalent state and territory laws.
